Parent FAQ Guide
The Anchor Learning Center
“A safe harbor for growing minds.”
Welcome to The Anchor
We know that choosing an educational environment for your child is a big decision, and we also know that families often have many questions about how our model works.
The Anchor was created to provide a calm, flexible, relationship-centered environment where students can learn in a way that works best for them. Because our model is different from traditional school settings, we want families to clearly understand what we offer, how our systems work, and what expectations help us operate smoothly for everyone involved.
This FAQ is designed to answer many of the most common questions we receive throughout the school year.
GENERAL PROGRAM QUESTIONS
What exactly is The Anchor?
The Anchor Learning Center is a flexible educational support center designed to help students complete their coursework in a calm, supportive environment. We provide varying levels of academic guidance, accountability, structure, and individualized support based on each child’s needs.
Our environment is intentionally smaller, relationship-based, and designed to reduce overwhelm while still maintaining academic expectations.
Is The Anchor a traditional school?
No. The Anchor operates differently than a traditional public or private school model.
We function as an educational support and learning center that partners with families to assist students with their academic success, structure, and day-to-day learning support.
Because our model is intentionally flexible, families play an important role in communication, scheduling, and educational decision-making.
What curriculum do students use?
Curriculum may vary depending on the student’s enrollment pathway and educational needs. Students may utilize online curriculum platforms, homeschool curriculum, individualized learning plans, or programs selected in collaboration with their family.
The Anchor focuses heavily on helping students successfully complete coursework while receiving the support, structure, and accountability they need.
What are our options for home study when registering, and what is the difference between those options?
Families can choose 1) BESE approved home study or 2) non-public not seeking BESE approval. Please reference this document from LDOE, as it defines each option to assist families in choosing what is best for their students.

What makes The Anchor different from traditional school?
At The Anchor:
Smaller group sizes allow for more individualized attention
Students are not expected to fit into a “one size fits all” model
Breaks, flexibility, and emotional regulation are valued
Relationships and emotional wellbeing matter
Students are supported at their own pace whenever possible
Families have more flexibility in choosing the level of support their child receives
We believe children learn best when they feel safe, seen, and supported.
What support levels do you offer?
Support levels vary based on the amount of academic guidance and staff involvement a student needs.
Guided Independent
Designed for students who work relatively independently but still benefit from accountability, structure, and occasional academic assistance.
Full Support
Designed for students who need more hands-on help, redirection, monitoring, and consistent staff involvement throughout the day.
Safe Harbor
Our highest level of support with a lower staff-to-student ratio designed for students who require deeply individualized guidance, emotional support, redirection, sensory accommodations, or intensive academic assistance.
SCHEDULING & ATTENDANCE
What are your operating hours?
Operating hours may vary slightly by location and program selection, but our primary instructional support hours are Monday–Thursday, 8AM - 3PM.
We intentionally remain closed on Fridays to allow students and families additional flexibility, appointments, independent work time, and rest.
Are students required to attend every day?
No. Families select the number of days their child will attend based on availability and the level of support their child needs.
Because staffing and scheduling are built around reserved student placements, families are expected to maintain consistency with the schedule they select.
What happens if my child is absent?
If your child will be absent, families should notify staff as soon as possible.
Please note: Tuition is based on reserving your child’s placement, staffing, operational costs, subscriptions, and support services — not individual attendance days.
Because staffing and budgeting are prepared in advance based on enrollment commitments, absences do not reduce tuition costs.
Can schedules be changed during the school year?
Possibly, depending on staffing and seat availability.
We understand that family needs sometimes change; however, schedule adjustments cannot always be guaranteed once staffing and group placements have been finalized.
Families should communicate schedule change requests as early as possible.
What happens if my child finishes coursework early?
Students who complete all required coursework for the academic year may begin their summer break early.
Because tuition is an annual amount divided into equal monthly payments, completion of coursework does not typically result in refunds or prorated adjustments.
TUITION & BILLING
How is tuition calculated?
Tuition reflects far more than daily attendance alone.
Costs include:
staffing
planning and supervision
curriculum monitoring
operational expenses
subscriptions and educational platforms
record maintenance
communication and administrative support
facility expenses
individualized student support
Annual tuition is divided into equal monthly payments for family convenience and budgeting consistency.
How much does it cost for my child to attend The Anchor Learning Center?
Every family, just like every student, has different needs. Please reference the tuition calculator to choose what works best for your family. In addition to our costs for services, families are responsible for paying for each child’s curriculum.
Why is tuition monthly if my child misses days?
Monthly tuition reserves your child’s placement within our program and covers ongoing operational and staffing costs regardless of attendance.
Much like childcare centers, private schools, and other educational programs, costs continue even when a student is absent.
Are refunds given for absences, vacations, or early completion?
No. Because staffing and operations are planned based on enrollment commitments, tuition is not adjusted for absences, vacations, illness, or early course completion.
When are payments due?
Invoices are due on the 1st of each month unless otherwise arranged in writing. ACH & credit card payments should be made prior in order for funds to be paid by the 1st.
Auto Pay plans through The Anchor Learning Center are available. These funds are drafted on the 25th of each month in order for timely payments.
What happens if payment is late?
Late or unpaid balances may result in:
late fees
temporary pause of services
loss of reserved placement
inability to attend programming
delayed records processing
Families experiencing financial hardship should communicate proactively before payments become overdue.
Can I freeze my child’s account?
In some situations, families may choose to freeze enrollment rather than continue services during the summer months.
Frozen accounts may impact pacing, grade-level continuation timelines, staffing placement, and future scheduling availability.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Who is responsible for making sure coursework gets completed?
The Anchor provides support, accountability, guidance, and assistance; however, successful course completion is ultimately a partnership between staff, students, and families.
Student motivation, attendance consistency, home support, and communication all play important roles in academic progress.
What if my child works at a slower pace?
That is okay.
One of the reasons many families choose The Anchor is because we understand that children learn differently and at different speeds.
We work hard to balance flexibility with accountability while helping students continue progressing toward completion.
What happens if my child falls behind?
Staff will communicate concerns with families and may recommend:
schedule adjustments
additional support days
increased monitoring
summer continuation options
modified pacing goals
Early communication helps us support students more effectively.
COMMUNICATION EXPECTATIONS
Who should I contact with concerns?
Families should first contact the appropriate staff member for their location or concern whenever possible.
This helps communication remain organized and allows issues to be addressed efficiently.
What is the expected response time?
While we do our best to respond quickly, staff members are actively supervising students throughout the day.
Please allow 24-48 hours for responses, especially outside of business hours, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
How are emergencies handled?
If an urgent situation arises involving student safety or wellbeing, families will be contacted immediately.
What communication platforms do you use?
Communication may occur through:
email
phone
text messaging
parent communication apps/platforms
social media announcements
Families are responsible for checking communication regularly.
BEHAVIOR & STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
What are behavior expectations?
Students are expected to:
treat others respectfully
follow staff directions
maintain safe behavior
respect the learning environment
use appropriate language and conduct
We strive to maintain a calm and supportive atmosphere for all students.
How does The Anchor handle discipline?
We prioritize relationship-based correction, redirection, emotional regulation, and communication.
However, behaviors that create safety concerns, ongoing disruption, aggression, or repeated refusal to follow expectations may require parent meetings, schedule adjustments, or reconsideration of placement.
Are breaks allowed?
Yes.
We understand that students sometimes need breaks, movement, quiet time, or sensory regulation in order to successfully return to learning.
Appropriate breaks are viewed as supportive tools — not punishment.
Can students use phones or personal devices?
Personal device expectations may vary by age and situation. We ask that all cell phones, if brought to the center, stay inside each student’s personal bag during their time here.
Devices that become distracting, disruptive, or inappropriate for the learning environment may be restricted during program hours.
DAILY LIFE AT THE ANCHOR
What should students bring each day?
Students should arrive with:
charged devices (if applicable)
necessary materials
water bottle
lunch/snacks
Specific supply lists may vary by location or program.
What is Lunch Bunch?
Lunch Bunch is an optional supervised midday social hour for students who remain on campus between program blocks. This can be added on to a student’s schedule. Lunch Bunch is from Noon - 1:30 PM each day.
What is Anchor Afternoons?
Anchor Afternoons is an optional afternoon extension program that may include:
homework support
enrichment
supervised activities
social opportunities
additional academic assistance
Availability may vary by location and staffing.
ENROLLMENT & WITHDRAWAL
How do I secure my child’s seat?
Enrollment is finalized once:
registration is completed
required documents are submitted
fees are paid
scheduling selections are confirmed
Because seating is limited, spots cannot be held without completed enrollment requirements.
Is enrollment first come, first served?
Yes. Due to limited staffing ratios and seat availability, enrollment is based on available placement capacity.
What happens if we withdraw mid-year?
Families choosing to withdraw should provide written notice as outlined in enrollment agreements.
Depending on timing and circumstances, financial obligations may still apply.
SUMMER & COURSE COMPLETION
What happens if my child does not finish coursework by May?
Families may choose between:
freezing the student’s progress until the next academic yearOR
continuing coursework through summer support options
Are summer services available?
Possibly. Summer services may include:
coursework monitoring
academic support
in-person sessions
virtual check-ins
continuation planning
Summer availability may vary yearly.
SAFETY & POLICIES
Are staff background checked?
Yes. Staff members undergo required screening procedures in accordance with applicable regulations and safety expectations.
How is student privacy protected?
We value student confidentiality and work to protect student information in accordance with applicable educational privacy expectations.
What happens if my child becomes sick at The Anchor?
Families may be contacted for pickup if a child becomes ill, has fever symptoms, vomiting, or other symptoms that could impact the wellbeing of others.
